Quesenberry Smith, a native of Blacksburg, VA,Ìýhas instructed English and American Literature,Ìýcreative writing, composition, and developmental reading and writing sinceÌý2009.ÌýInÌý2013, she joinedÌýthe faculty at VMI where she teachesÌýthe first-year courses inÌýwriting and rhetoric. She earned a B.A. in biology and a B.A. in English literatureÌýin 1985Ìýfrom Hollins UniversityÌýand returned a fifth year to complete anÌýM.A. in English literature and creative writingÌýin 1986.ÌýIn 2024, sheÌýobtained a Ph.D. at Virginia TechÌýwhere she studiedÌýwithÌýBradley Bowen, Ph.D.,ÌýSheila Carter Todd, Ph.D., John Wells, Ph.D., and otherÌýwriting, rhetoric,Ìýand STEMÌýeducationÌýscholars. Her doctoral researchÌýinvestigated the nature andÌýperceptionsÌýofÌýundergraduate students’Ìýshort critical reflective writing within their hands-on technologyÌýand engineeringÌýdesign-basedÌýlearningÌýinÌýthreeÌýcapstone classes inÌýcomputer and informationÌýsciencesÌýat VMI.ÌýAfter earning her Ph.D., she was awarded a NationalÌýSecurity AgencyÌýGrantÌýat VMI. This grantÌýsupportedÌýthe design of aÌýcollaborative researchÌýproject where sheÌýmentoredÌýtwo cadets’Ìýundergraduate research and writingÌýaboutÌýtechnology, engineering, and cybersecurity innovationsÌýwhich resulted in aÌýsystematic literature review about ways educators use “cyber-toolsâ€� to supportÌýcritical reflective writing within technology and engineering problem-solving.ÌýCadet Stephen RalisÌýand Smith presented “Cyber-tools for Critical Reflection during Technology and Engineering Design Based Problem Solving: A Systematic Review of Techno-Constructivist Approachesâ€�Ìýat the Writing Education across Borders Conference (WEAB) in Salt Lake City, UT,ÌýonÌýSeptemberÌý21, 2024. Smith continues to researchÌýthe ways cyber-tools, such as AI and generative AI, might support critical reflection and critical reflective writingÌýduring hands-on design- and project-basedÌýinitiatives.ÌýÌý

SmithÌýhas written in many genres. SheÌýisÌýespeciallyÌýinterested in the interplay between science, technology, and creative writing.ÌýAs a poetÌýand essayist, sheÌýisÌýpublishedÌýinÌýliterary magazines and online journals.ÌýIn November 2024, she was appointed for a two-year term as Virginia’s Poet Laureate. In August 2025, she was awarded one of twenty-three Academy of American Poets Laureate Fellowships. As a resultÌýof this award, sheÌýdirectsÌýPerseverance and Resilience, a civic projectÌýthat supportsÌýAmericanÌýveterans and their communities through poetry.ÌýSmith and her husband, Douglas N. Smith,ÌýalsoÌýa faculty member at VMI, share several creativeÌýfilm and screenwriting projects, includingÌýBetween Two Fires,Ìýan award-winning documentary about the forced repatriation of Soviet citizensÌýafter WorldÌýWar II;ÌýaÌýmulti-platformÌýproject which includes aÌýgraphic novelÌýand screenplayÌýentitledÌýEagle in the Snow;ÌýandÌýa film projectÌýinÌýdevelopment entitled “Daughter of the Stars,â€� set in the ShenandoahÌýParkwayÌýwhereÌýprivate properties were seized byÌýeminent domainÌýfor the parkÌýland. Smith and her husband live at the foot of House Mountain in Kerrs Creek, where they have raised their ten children.Ìý
