Journey through the stories that shaped America at the Jackson House Museum every Tuesday afternoon in June at 2 p.m.
From early settlers to the Underground Railroad, the Jackson House’s America’s 250th Story Hour will explore a different chapter of American history each week through captivating storytelling led by costumed interpreters.
Designed primarily for children ages 10 and under, this interactive program encourages kids to discover how every story — big or small — shapes the American story we share today. Along with engaging historical tales, each child will receive a special take-home booklet to tell their story.
We ask parents to stay on site during the program. Parents can stay for the story or enjoy the opportunity to explore our site.

First Beginnings, June 2 at 2 p.m.
Step back to the beginning of American’s story. Explore Jamestown and the lives, challenges, and hopes of early settlers building a new world.
Fight for Independence, June 9 at 2 p.m.
Stand at the dawn of a new nation. Experience the Revolutionary War through the voices, courage, and turning points that shaped America’s fight for independence.
Founding Fathers, June 16 at 2 p.m.
Meet the visionaries who helped shape America. Discover the Founding Fathers and Mothers in the nation’s earliest days.
Forge the Frontier, June 23 at 2 p.m.
Follow the call of adventure and opportunity. Journey with early explorers and pioneers as they push westward into new lands and possibilities.
Following Freedom, June 30 at 2 p.m.
Hear stories of courage in the pursuit of freedom. Learn about the Underground Railroad and the brave paths taken toward liberty and hope.
Grow Your Own Kitchen Garden Series
TBD in the fall

Led by expert Rockbridge Area Master Gardeners, this interactive session will blend practical gardening techniques with captivating history. Guests will learn how kitchen gardens were once essential to daily life—especially during the mid-nineteenth century — and how Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson relied on gardening not only to support his household but as an enjoyable hobby.
Space is limited, so pre-registration is required. Admission is free, thanks to the generosity of the Rockbridge Area Master Gardener Association.
Apple Day
Saturday, October 3
10 a.m. – 1 p.m.

The Jackson House Museum will hold its annual Apple Day Celebration on Washington Street in front of the Jackson House Museum. Festivities include cider pressing, music, dancing, storytelling, games, and crafts for children of all ages.
Participants have a chance unplug from modern technology and enjoy some old-fashioned family fun! Watch an antique, hand-cranked cider press in action, enjoy learning 19th- century dancing, such as the Polka, a favorite of Thomas Jackson. Throughout the day children will have the opportunity to learn how to make dolls, potato scarecrows like the Jacksons used for their garden, play apple toss, pin-the-tail-on-Little Sorrel, and more. Or sit back, relax, and enjoy storytelling from a costumed interpreter.
All the demonstrations and activities are free. Regular admission prices to tour the house apply. Residents of Lexington, Buena Vista, and Rockbridge County receive free admission for the tour.

Christmas at the Jacksons
Friday, Dec. 11
6 – 8 p.m.

Visitors will step back in time and experience an 1859 Christmas while interacting with costumed interpreters. Those who attend will also have an opportunity to be a part of the “preparations” by singing Christmas Carols, churning butter in the kitchen, and helping our 1859 visitors pick the proper outfit for dinner. Last tour will be at 7:40 p.m.
Admission for the event is canned food for humans and/or pets to benefits the Rockbridge Area Relief Association Food Pantry. Help us give back to our local community and come out for an evening of candlelit magic.
